The Guests of Abraham

Have you ever heard about the story of Abraham’s honored guests? [890] They came before him and said, “Peace,” and “Peace, strangers,” he answered back. Then he rushed to his family, and soon he came out with (a platter of) roasted meat. He placed it in front of them and said, “Why don’t you eat?”

[24-27]

(When they didn’t take anything,) he became afraid of them. They said, “Have no fear,” and then they gave him the good news that he would have a son filled with knowledge. Then his wife came forward and made a scene; she slapped her forehead and exclaimed, “From a barren old woman like me!” [28-29]

They replied, “So it shall be, for your Lord has decreed it, and He’s full of wisdom and knowledge.” (Then Abraham asked), “Now messengers, what’s your next task?” [30-31]

“We’re being sent to a wicked people” they answered, “to bring a shower of splintered rock down upon them, (which is) intended from your Lord upon those who do an outlandish crime.” [891] [32-34]

Then We set about to evacuate all those who had faith, though We found no one surrendered (to God in that city,) save for in one house. We left a portent in (that city’s destruction) for all those who would fear the painful punishment (of God). [35-37]

(Here’s an example) with Moses. We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority, but (Pharaoh) turned back with his nobles and said (of Moses), “A wizard or a crazy man!” Then We took him and his legions and threw them in the open sea, and all the blame was on him. [38-40]

In the (people) of ‘Ad (is another example). We sent against them a devastating sandstorm. It left nothing standing in its path and reduced everything to ruin. [41-42]

In the (people) of Thamud (is a further sign). They were told, “Enjoy yourselves for a little while!” Then they boldly disobeyed the order of their Lord. So the great rumbling blast (of an earthquake) seized them even as they were looking on. They couldn’t even stand up, let alone help themselves. The people of Noah who came before them were just as bad. [43-46]
